try netflights.com
This site - www.momondo.com - is particularly brilliant for finding such stuff out. Sorry I can't be much more use, though.
There are loads of price comparison websites about. A couple have been mentioned already and you could also try expedia and travelsupermarket. Just type "cheap flights to" and add the Aussie city you want to go to.

when you spot a flight you like check it out on the airline's own website before you buy to see if it is cheaper. You can also find out a few other things like your baggage allowance, where the plane stops for refuelling and how long for. This can make a big difference to the enjoyment of the flight if you can get off and relax for a while.

BA only serve Sydney now from the UK but they code share extensively with Qantas and flights on the BA site are, strangely enough, often cheaper than on the Qantas site for the same flight.

Emirates are a Personal favourite of mine because they depart from a number of regional airports in the UK to Dubai where you can get flights to all the major Australian cities. They offer a service non stop to Sydney from Dubai for example on the new A380 which I can tell you is a great plane.

KLM and air France also offer services to Australia but you would have to fly via Amsterdam or Paris and then still have a refuelling stop. This makes for a very long journey.
I;m heading over there next month too :) im flying British airways except it was one of the more expensive airlines. You should try Singapore Air or go on webjet.com.au and view this thing:

Then go on that individual airlines website and book the cheap fare, if you book through webjet they charge you for using the service

Hope I helped :)
I would try to find good low cost connection options, and there's one page which will do that well for you, Dohop.com. I work for Dohop, so I'd also like to recommend Skyscanner and Bing.

The accompanying article says Dohop and Bing are the best for international flights.
with such short notice you will have missed the cheaper tickets as they are usually sold off six months in advance. With the distance involved here, there are very few flights each day making getting cheap tickets very hard.
Use Emirates or FlyGlasgow http://www.flyglasgow.net

Currently, the cheapest value fares would be from Emirates and Singapore. Singapore has regular promotions for their A380 legs, so you can fly Uk to Singapore, Singapore to Melb/Syd on the A380 for around $1k-$1.5k.

For the absolutely cheapest flights you can not beat Airasia. However its not a direct flight, you need to book a leg from Lon to Kuala Lumpure, Malaysian. And then Kuala Lumpur to Melbourne or Gold Coast. All up you can get for less then $1000 return on special. Some fares as low as $800.
