It depends on exactly where you want to go and when. The train is often a good way to get around. there is an excellent website here: http://www.seat61.com/ that explains rail travel here in Europe in detail. The site tells you how to determine whether a railpass has any value for you or whether individual tickets are better. Here in Italy, individual tickets are almost always cheaper. If a railpass is useful for you, it will tell you how to determine which pass to buy and how to use it. You need to be aware that many trains require a reservation even when you use a pass and there is often an additional fee for the reservation. Here in Italy, the fast trains require a 10 euro charge for the reservation.
The site has links to the various national train sites where you can price individual tickets and find
schedules.
There are budget flights available for longer trips. A good site for finding budget flights is: http://www.skyscanner.com/
Go to http://www.eurail.com/home get yourself a Euro rail pass, depending on how many countries you plan on visiting/traveling through. Most trains do not require a reservation, the ones that do will tell you. With that pass its cheaper to go by train than it is by plane. If you do want to fly I would recommend checking out Ryan Air they have really good rates.
Good luck and have fun!How can I find cheap flights/train tickets for my travels abroad?
Where are you flying from? This detail would help to suggest you the best airfare. Anyway - try http://www.travelpapa.com/ (airline consolidator). Consolidators work through contracts with major carriers to manage blocks of airline seat inventory at reduced prices which they then sell. Fares through consolidators will be lower than published rates available from the airlines themselves.
Good luck!
You may also want to check their FB page for coupon codes or any other promotions:

If you chose airplanes, try also www.easyjet.com They have also very good prices. I 've travelled many times with them and I was very satisfied.
Ryan air is very cheap but consider that in some countries they use airports very far from the city although they have good connections with buses or trains.
For your hotels try www.booking.com very well organized with maps and city plans so that you know exactly where is your hotel.
Have a nice trip!
