For instance its costing me $584 to get to NYC from London. When i searched some flights from NYC to San diago, its more expensive.

Beware of SPIRIT AIRLINES!!! They have hidden fees and their customer service is next to impossible to get through to. And if you do, they're n India and have very broken English. All you're allowed is one carry-on and you have to pay extra for any checked baggage. Plus, you can't even choose your seat without paying for that too.
