Really cheap flights round trip to australia?

My friend and I are trying to get to sydney to visit a friend who is studying abroad in sydney. We do not have a lot of money and are trying to find a way to fly really cheap. Is there anyway we can fly really cheap?Really cheap flights round trip to australia?
I guess you are writing this from the US is that right? Well if you are, it's not great news because they are only two airlines flying direct from the US to AUS and that's United and Qantas. Qantas holds about 70% of the market so they do the price they want and United just follows.

If you want something cheaper you'll have to go either via Canada and Hawaii or via Asia perhaps with Japan Airlines, Cathay etc.
